Thinking of Everything When You Buy New Car Insurance
April 15, 2015
If you find yourself constantly visualizing you in a new car or truck and perhaps getting rid of the old family workhorse in the bargain, you could find that the price of insuring a new vehicle can be surprisingly high. It would be a good idea to look more closely at why this should be so before you head out to buy new car replacements for the old ones in your family.
Let’s start with the kind of exterior you car has. Do you realize that you could buy a staid car like a Camry or an Accord and still pay sports car type insurance premiums? It doesn’t make sense of course, but if you buy a two door version or a coupe version of any of these family standardbearers, you will be placed in the insurance category occupied by sports car owners. They feel that anyone who buys a two door car has to want to drive his car like a Mustang. And harder they believe you will drive your car, the more they’ll charge you for being a high risk car owner. But would you believe it – owners of convertibles have to pay less when they buy new car insurance than owners of standard top cars.
So if safety equals savings when you buy new car insurance, how about an SUV? There could be nothing safer for you than a large car like that, could there? Not so fast. An SUV does keep you safe; but whoever you hit with the SUV is going to be in serious trouble. And your insurance company will probably be liable for them too. So if you are planning on buying an SUV, you’d better reconsider for the kind of insurance charges you will end up paying.
The kind of brand you end up buying can have a lot to say about your insurance costs too. You could look it up on any popular Internet calculator, but owning the latest Ford Fusion can be a lot less expensive than a Camry. To buy new car insurance for the Ford Fusion can be a gladdening experience. The Ford F1 50 wins out against the Dodge RAM too. Even the kind of engine and transmission your car comes equipped with can make a lot of difference to your insurance costs in the end. Generally, a manual transmission is more expensive to insure. So there you go – it makes all the difference in the world to what your insurance costs will be like, the kind of car you buy.
Buying New Cars with Dignity – Taking Test Drives Without Fear
April 12, 2015
To most people, buying cars isn’t the happy and exciting experience they would rather it was. It’s usually anxiety-provoking. The reason is that is that they know that they have to deal with car salesmen any time they walk into a dealership to test drive a car. People hate the pressure that buying new cars lands them in. The salesman is always completely tuned into one channel – trying to get you to commit right now. You are on a completely different channel – you want to just collect information and try to decide at your own pace. The problem is, that you are in their turf at the dealership. You aren’t the one who’s trying to dream up new ways to trap them into doing anything. They are the ones who are trying to trap you.
No matter what you say, salesmen just keep coming back trying to discuss prices with you. Any time to do that, all you need to do is to politely and firmly say to them that you don’t wish to waste their time, that you are considering other cars as well, and that you will not look at any numbers or discuss prices. You just want a test drive, and buying new cars isn’t on your menu this day. The fact that you are unwilling to waste their time will certainly gain you a little grudging respect from them. At the end of the test drive, they’re going to make you feel like you owe them the courtesy of sitting down to discuss the prices. But you know what to say to them.
Make sure that you never call up ahead to book a test run. That’s a move that’s too much like trying to be their friend. They aren’t your friend just because they smile at you and shake your hand, are they? During the test drive, it is the job of the salesman to really pump you up. They’ll turn the stereo up and try to show you how great everything is. In short, they’re trying to get you feel celebratory. You’re here for a test drive though, and are trying to size everything up. You’re in the middle of a serious job and the salesman is trying to distract you. Ask pointed and deep questions about how to work everything, turn down the music and try to listen for any strange noises. No matter what you see that really excites you, don’t show any excitement. Pretend like you are quite unimpressed with what you are seeing.
You get the picture, don’t you? You’re not to budge no matter how much they try their mind games on you. At the end of the test drive, tell them you understand that having customers buying new cars is what they’re interested in, but you have to take your time to make the right decision. Take their business card and leave with dignity. You’ll feel better about yourself for having done this.
Pegboards and Oil Absorbent Pads in the Garage
April 10, 2015
One of my hobbies is tinkering on old cars in my garage. To me there’s nothing more relaxing than getting under the hood of what someone else considers a “piece of junk” and doing my thing to make it run again. I’m not quite at the point where I can say that I restore classic cars, but that’s definitely my goal someday. It takes money to get into that game, though, so for now I just practice on old beaters that I find for a couple hundred bucks each. Once I get the vehicles running again, I can usually find a buyer and recoup my costs.
Anyway, I’ve learned that working on cars is a whole lot easier if my garage is as clean and organized as possible. That’s why I’ve got pegboards all along each wall, several toolboxes, and a bunch of oil absorbent pads right at my side. I’ve gotten in the habit of hanging my tools neatly on the pegboards or placing them in a toolbox as soon as I’m done using them. This cuts down on wasted time because I no longer have to spend five minutes looking for a particular wrench. I know exactly where it is at all times.
Oil absorbent pads are also a necessity for cleaning up spills and other accidents. Spills are unavoidable in this business, but the last thing I want is for my garage floor to be covered in unsightly stains. The only remedy is to clean up a mess with oil absorbent pads as soon as it happens so the stuff doesn’t have a chance to soak in. I also use an eco-friendly powder agent to take care of any residue that the oil absorbent pads might have left behind. The result is that my garage floor is as spotless today as the day I moved in!
It does take a lot of time and effort to organize a garage or workshop, but the results are worth it. It’s actually quite empowering to know exactly where to go for a specific screwdriver, torque wrench, or ratchet that I need for a particular job. I’m far more efficient now than I’ve ever been, and can concentrate on perfecting my craft rather than trying to remember where I left my pliers. Some people might not care about organization as much as I do, but at this point there’s no way I would want to deal with a messy garage ever again.
If you’re thinking about creating your own workspace in your basement or garage, then I recommend getting organized right from the start. Investing some money in pegboards, toolboxes, and oil absorbent pads will put you well on your way to maintaining an efficient and clean workshop!
Auto Loans for Bad Credit
April 8, 2015
Not long ago, if you didn’t have an impressive credit history, you can pretty much forget qualifying for a decent car loan. These days however, there are specialized lenders who put together financing packages for auto loans for anyone with unblemished credit history. What this tends to mean is, that even if you tried your best before to get past their jump through all the hoops and qualify for a loan, you could conceivably try again today and possibly qualify for a loan. Credit unions, the banks and other auto finance firms that deal in prime loan prospects usually stay away from anything risky such as making onto loans for bad credit score holders. To these established players, anything less than stellar credit record makes the deal a little too risky for them. The trouble with this approach is, that relying on a credit score isn’t the best way to tell if a particular pr loan applicant is likely to default. Credit scores can be notoriously unfair. People with a new credit history can have a low score even if they have a great job; people can have mistaken penalties under credit reports; they can even have poor credit score is just because they happened to shop around a lot for a loan.
The smaller nonpublic lenders though try to look past the credit score, into the real meaning of credit report. Still, auto loans for bad credit don’t really make much financial sense. You would probably do yourself a big favor if you could clean up your credit score so that you rate about 680. And of course, you need to be making at least $1500 a month. If you can’t swing any of this, you should probably not apply for an auto loan at all. Auto loans for bad credit holders can be a terrible deal for many reasons. People who have trouble financing a car are usually people who have been repeatedly turned down and have terrible self-esteem walking in to each new dealership or financing office. When the dealer tries all kinds of tricks on you, trying to sell you a VIN etching, an extended warranty, they barely have the nerve to object because use of grateful for the offer the loan in the first place.
One of the biggest scams that applicants for auto loans for bad credit scores deal with is, the “subject to financing” scam. They know that you are so grateful to have a loan that they sell you on a proposition for a low sounding APR and send it home in a new car. Two weeks later, they call and tell you that that particular deal fell through, but that they have a need proposition with an even lower APR. He had better know that that’s not possible. The only thing that makes it possible is that they’ve extended the number of months you’ll be paying your car off. You’ll be upside down on your car very soon. Make sure that you check all the online loan calculators give you a rate on your credit score. Never sign anything until you do so.
What To Look For In Used Minivans
April 7, 2015
If your next vehicle will be a minivan, you may or may or may not want to get something used. New minivans are often very expensive if you are getting a second car, so think about used minivans when you are shopping. When checking them out, there are a few things that you must insist upon, and some extras that you may want to have when you make your final choice. Most who choose these cars have children and need them to get everyone around, therefore any old minivan is not always what will work best for you and your family.
As with other cars, always check used minivans for rust. If you live where winter is a pain, salt from the roads can do a number on the bottom of any vehicle. Look under your possible minivan before you decide to do any further checking. If you see rust, you may want to move on. You should also check used minivans for sliding doors that won’t work. These are often problematic on older minivans, so these are always something you should check over before you get too far. If they don’t work, you want to find something else.
If everything looks okay so far, you can then check used minivans like you would any other type of vehicle. You should have a mechanic look over the the engine and all relevant mechanical parts of the minivan. You want to make sure the engine is in good shape, that all electrical parts like the windows and moving seats work as they should. The overall shape of the frame of the used minivans is also important, so make sure that is checked out as well. Any good mechanic can tell you if a car is worth the asking price or if there are major safety or mechanical concerns about which you should know.
Once you have found used minivans that you think are up to par, you can start to think about the extras that you may want. Some people assume that because they are buying used that they can not expect to have some nice features. Someone once bought these used minivans new and they may have come with some great extras. A remote car starter can be problematic on an older van, but if you can find one with this included, it is a huge bonus. Some also come with DVD players, which can be great if you have kids that easily get bored.
You also want to look into the history of the used minivans that you want to buy. Though some may pass a close inspection and may have a lot of cool extras, there are some problems that you won’t know about until you see a report on the history of the car. Some frame problems can seem fine but compromise the safety of the car, and you may not know that unless you see the car history. Ask for a CarFax so you know where the minivan has been and what it has been through. Only then can you make your final decision about which minivans are the best choice for your family.
Extended Car Warranties Worth your Money?
April 6, 2015
Are extended car warranties a waste of your time and money? Extended warranties on items like televisions and home stereos (are they even called that anymore?) usually are, because nothing usually goes wrong with these. That’s not how it is with a car full of moving parts and burning heated fuel though. Look at it this way – would you buy a car that came with no warranty? If the thought makes you uncomfortable, there is your answer to why a warranty is a good idea. Just as medical insurance protects you in the event something happens, there always is something possible with a car. People buying on eBay Motors know that – buyers will always pay more for a car that’s under warranty. The warranty makes people comfortable for a very good reason – a car is an insanely complex mechanical machine and there are any number of things that can go wrong with it from time to time.
Some people do have a legitimate point when they complain that extended car warranties are not useful. These are usually people who have bought their warranties without researching their options – from junk mail usually. Your extended warranty is only as good as the company that provides it. If you are buying from a company that just might go under really quickly, you’ll have nothing to show for your money. People without a car that’s reliable don’t get an interview, and don’t get a job. Just think about it – if the transmission drops out, it can easily set you back more than a couple thousand dollars. All accounted for, there are far more reasons to get extended car warranties than there are not to.
But there are things you need to keep in mind. Your first point here is that your extended warranty needs to come from a reputable company. If one company seems far more affordable than another, if you wish to go with the cut-rate price, try to look at your options in financing the better more expensive warranty. Typically, you should get 0% financing. If you bought an extended warranty from a car dealer, they would usually add it to the price of your car and finance it with your 14% APR car loan.
If you feel that there is nothing you can do about your car now because you car’s pretty old, think again. Companies like WarrantyDirect have products for cars that are well over 100,000 miles. They cover big-ticket items like transmission and engine, and also give you 24×7 emergency roadside assistance. That should make you feel like you’re driving a Mercedes, now shouldn’t it?
